“…true masters are never slaves to the profession, every craft is first and foremost a lifestyle and only pursued as an activity proceeding from this, only secondarily a trade.” This is what was professed by Lajos Dobos, the most outstanding photographer and head of the photographic laboratory during the time of the National Inspectorate of Monuments. His photographs are not just documents, but also objects of artistic value in our collections. Numerous examples of his work can be seen in our exhibition Heritage of the Centuries. One of his most finely composed pictures has been selected as the artwork of the month. It appears in the exhibition section entitled To Conserve or to Restore?, which also covers the historic rehabilitation principles from the time after World War II.
